On November 12th, at COP 22 in Marrakech, R20 hosted an official UNFCC side-event, Innovative Value Chain & Financial Ecosystem for Sub-national Governments. The event was co-hosted with the Assembly of European Regions (AER), ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, the Global Fund for Cities Development (FMDV), and the United Regions Organization (ORU-FOGAR). More than 250 people attended this event which presented the results of the 100 Climate Solutions Projects Campaign that was graciously supported by the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation.

At its culmination, this campaign identified more than 650 projects – 400 of which met R20’s initial screening criteria. All of the selected projects focus on waste management, renewable energy, energy efficiency, or energy-efficient city lighting and demonstrate positive environmental and social impacts.

Saturday’s event hosted speakers from R20 partner organizations. Mr. Abdessamad Sekkal (President both of Rabat-Salé Region of Morocco and of ORU-FOGAR), Mr. Mangus Berntsson (Vice President of AER), Mr. Jean-François Habeau (Secretary General of FMDV), and Mr. Roman Mendle (the Coordinator for Transformative Actions Programme of ICLEI) presented their inputs on the 100 Climate Solutions project portfolio.

Moreover, representatives of the private sector, including Mr. Bernhard Gamerith (Technical Director of the Austrian engineering firm, Compost Systems) and Mr. Harry Verhaar (Head of Global Public and Government Affairs of Philips Lighting) presented the results of their partnership with R20.

In addition, Mr. Yue Han (Director of the International Centre, Jiangsu Modern Low Carbon Technology Institute in Nanping City) presented his vision for partnership with R20 in China. The event concluded with closing remarks from President Sekkal, who then gave the floor to representatives of Moroccan youth who mobilized in support of the Green Economy.
